The 21c Museum Hotel in Durham is one of a kind. I’ve never stayed at any hotel like it. It’s located in the heart of downtown Durham in the old historic Hill Building. 21c is so much more than a hotel. This boutique hotel is a contemporary art museum, cultural civic center, and home to the Counting House restaurant. If you’re passing through or staying in Durham it’s a must to experience the iconic Fuchsia Penguin!

Hotel + Rooms
I’m a huge fan of this boutique hotel. There is valet when you pull up, which makes life easy. The entire first floor is decorated with magnificent art. Personally, I’m a fan of grand scale art, especially when it’s covered in glitter. The white walls make for the perfect background against the must see art throughout the hotel. Check-in is super laid back and the staff was extremely friendly.
The new modern rooms are just as nice. They are spacious and include a mini bar, comfortable robes, large windows, complimentary high speed wi-fi, and can sometimes come with a 3ft pink penguin as a guest! The bathroom is also a great size with ample counter space (which is a must for me)!
The 21c suite is the best suite in the house located on the 15th floor. With the huge windows that surround the entire suite you’re able to see the stellar views of downtown Durham! There is even an outdoor soaking tub on your very own private terrace.
Other amenities include a spa and well equipped fitness center! Plus there is a gift shop where you can buy your very own little pink penguin to take home!
Bonus: the hotel is pet-friendly!
Museum
I found it interesting that 21c was founded by Laura Lee Brown and Steve Wilson, contemporary art collectors, who started the hotel to broaden the audience and appreciation of contemporary art. I was told by the staff that a lot of the art decorating the hotel was the founders personal collection. Who knows if that is true but if it is, I’m a huge fan! Besides the art decorating the hotel there is an entire museum where you can see an amazing collection of art. They even have exhibitions that are welcome to the public!
Food + Drink
Room service is always a plus for me with my busy schedule while traveling. You can also head to the lobby to eat at the on site restaurant, Counting House. I was really impressed with their menu and wide selection of cocktails! I definitely recommend sampling a few local craft brews, or exploring the broad bourbon and wine lists.
