Our First Family Vacation at the Barnsley Resort

Our amazing first family vacation at the Barnsley resort and gardens, one of the coolest Atlanta getaways in North Georgia for those who love staycations and castles!

Barnsley Resort is a place that—literally—wears its heart on its sleeve. Godfrey Barnsley poured his heart and soul into this grand, Southern estate; a gift for his beloved bride two centuries ago. Today their Southern traditions and storybook setting seduce travelers from near and far. Barnsley Resort is the ultimate retreat to unplug and find balance. If you crave a connection to an outdoor lifestyle, nature and history and yearn to pursue your passions, then welcome.

This North Georgia resort offers visitors the pleasures and pursuits of a fine Southern estate: exceptional cuisine, a championship golf course, a sporting club, relaxing spa, excellent horseback riding and trails and wilderness for hiking, walking and biking. Ideal for leisure vacations, romantic getaways, business meetings and sparkling events, this celebrated retreat is just a short drive from both Atlanta and Chattanooga.

This was the first vacation we took with baby Colton and it was the perfect weekend getaway. Just something light, close to home, and fun for the whole family (including our two dogs)!

They have an inn with 55 rooms and suites as well as cottages, manors, suites, arbors, and estate cottages for the ultimate privacy. They have some cottages that are close together for a community feel and some on the outskirts of the property that are more in nature if you prefer a more secluded getaway.

INN AT BARNSLEY RESORT

Inspired by the British architect Edwin Lutyens, the three-story Inn at Barnsley Resort was built to compliment the resort’s pedestrian-friendly, English-inspired village. When stepping into the Inn’s reception area, guests notice the stained and hand-scraped hardwood floors, a grand staircase and exposed beams. Gather in front of the fire in the Living Room, where intimate seating areas evoke the feeling of being an invited guest at a fine country estate. With 55-well-appointed guest rooms and suites, the Inn at Barnsley Resort offers a welcome respite from which to explore this North Georgia resort.

COTTAGES: MANORS, SUITES & ARBORS

Offering a variety of experiences in the resort’s pedestrian (or bike) friendly village, each of the charming cottages is unique while offering hardwood floors, wood-burning fireplaces and clawfoot bathtubs. Many of the cottages include two separate one-bedroom suites, each offering a living room, bedroom with a king-size bed and porches to enjoy the view, and sounds of birds chirping nearby. Arbor Cottages are the most private accommodation option as a one-bedroom suite housed within its own private cottage. Six Manor Cottages each offer four bedrooms, porches and a shared living room perfect for families or groups traveling together.

ESTATE COTTAGES

Estate Cottages offer the ultimate private North Georgia getaway for family gatherings, weddings and business groups. Food + Beverage

From fine dining to a beer garden, at Barnsley, every taste, palate and mood is different and that’s why they offer guests such a range of restaurants to choose from. Their carefully tended gardens are the root and source of many delectable and tasty ingredients at the restaurants throughout the resort. They take pride in growing their own fresh produce and integrating them into the meaningful meals the chefs prepare. Garden to Table is not a passing fad at Barnsley, it is a way of life.

Woodlands Grill – Overlooking the picturesque Fazio-designed golf course and surrounding hills, Woodlands Grill is where you’ll find delicious meals paired with an extensive wine list as well as craft beer and spirit selections. They also have a cozy Wine Library for private dining. It’s also a great place to meet up with friends for a game of billiards at Dugan’s Tavern, Woodlands Grill Lounge.

The food was amazing!

Rice House – Located in a 19th century farmhouse, the Rice House strives to blur the lines between farm and restaurant to create a truly “yard to fork” experience. Chef de Cuisine Evan Babb and team incorporate the freshest local ingredients including farm-grazed beef, locally foraged mushrooms and seasonal garden ingredients produced in their own kitchen gardens into the menus. Chef Babb even spends his time “off” working alongside Barnsley purveyors at local farms, ensuring the freshest available ingredients are incorporated into the Rice House menus.

The Sun Porch and two small private dining rooms are perfect if you want to entertain friends or colleagues.

Beer Garden – A casual, outdoor restaurant with a fire pit, and large trees strung with twinkling lights, the Beer Garden offers a menu of Southern snacks like pickles and pimento cheese along with a variety of barbecue sandwiches and plates along with a selection of more than 30 craft beers. For breakfast on the go, a new “grab & go” option offers a variety of breakfast sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, coffee and juice.

Wild Mushroom & Herb Forage – Join Rice House Chef de Cuisine and Certified Guide Evan Babb for a guided Wild Mushroom & Herb Forage experience. Search and forage for various types of mushrooms they may be found on the resort’s 3,000-acre property which could include ramps, chicken of the woods mushrooms, hedgehog mushrooms and more. While on the forage, Chef Babb will provide tips and hints on what to look for in order to best find mushrooms and herbs, and insight on the various mushrooms found. Naturally the mushrooms/herbs in each forage will rotate depending on the season.

My husband got to play a round of golf and loved it. He said he’d go back just to play golf, even if we didn’t stay there.

With striking views of mountain peaks and the best collections of par 3’s in all of golf. Strategic hazards and dramatic tee shots descending to soft greens below will leave you speechless. The Grounds at The Barnsley Resort

Probably the most beautiful property I’ve ever stayed at. The grounds at The Barnsley Resort are stunning. There are tons of gardens, lush greenery, a beautiful bamboo forest, farms, lakes, golf courses, the ruins, miles of hiking trails, UTV trail riding, fising, disc golf, biking, horseback riding, shooting, hunting, bird watching, fountains, kayaking, and of course the pool. There is so much to see and do that you can’t possibly do everything in one stay.

Take a look at the beauty of Barnsley below!

The Ruins of the Barnsley Resort

The Manor House Ruins, called Woodlands, are the remnants of the original 19th century Italianate villa built by Godfrey Barnsley for his wife Julia. From the first approach on Manor House Lane, a classic boxwood parterre garden leading up to the once grand manor home greets guests. The Barnsley Museum, located within the original kitchen wing of the home, features an extensive display of Barnsley Family belongings that bring their colorful story to life, along with a display of Civil War era artifacts.
