I recently took some clients out for drinks at The St.Regis and had the opportunity to experience a Champagne Toast.
The featured Champagne was Blue Top! The sommelier did a nice presentation told us that it was the official champagne aboard the Titanic’s first class passengers then proceeded to pop the champagne Cameron Diaz style like in What Happens In Vegas… old school…with a sword! It took off the glass lip too! This champagne is amazing! It’s a blend of all my favorite grapes so I love it! (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier)
Some fun facts:
From the famous Champagne region of France (only wines made in Champagne can really be called Champagne) one of the world’s foremost champagne houses has produced a limited run of its popular Blue Top non-vintage bubbly — Heidsieck & Co. Monopole — the official champagne aboard the ill-fated Titanic. (When they were bringing up salvage from the boat a few years back, they pulled-up some Heidsieck Monopole and it tasted terrific!
Georges-Auguste Escoffier and César Ritz, of the Hotel Ritz in Paris, both consulted on the ship’s menu and service for the Titanic.
In 1912, George D. Widener, his wife, and their son Harry traveled to Paris, France, with original intentions to find a chef for Widener’s new Philadelphia hotel, The Ritz Carlton. Unfortunately he went down with the ship but his wife and unborn baby made it off the ship and onto run something to do with The Ritz Hotel or St. Regis and the champagne but I can’t remember which….
Anyways, I’m not one to turn down a good glass of bubbly especially one with so much history! Such a great experience and it gave me goose bumps talking about it!
