5 things to do in Hilton Head Island

hilton head island city guide

I’ve been going to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina since I was young. It’s been our annual family vacation for as long as I can remember. If you’re looking for a chill family vibe and easy going atmosphere I highly recommend HHI. There are so many things to see and do for everyone in the family. Activities include tennis, golf, biking the island to the light house, flying high in a helicopter, walking on the beach, or just hanging out at the resort by the pool. There is something for everyone.

Here are my top 5 things to do when you visit HHI:

1. Biking to Harbor Town + walking up the light house

(or just biking around in general)

Harbor Town is a cute little area full of fun boutiques for shopping, restaurants, and a marina. If you’re lucky you might see at dolphin! On the bike ride stay close to the bike path because chances are you’ll pass a few alligators! Once you get to Harbor Town head up the light house and take in the views!

There are over 50 miles of public pathways and nature trails for biking.  Not only that but the beaches are super flat so you’re able to bike easily along the ocean! If biking isn’t for you, head to one of the golf courses spread throughout the island.

2. Salty Dog Café

Because you have to. It’s a staple. It’s well know. And it’s tradition. Every year I come home with a different Salty Dog t-shirt and bandanas for the puppies. You can sit outside overlooking the water watching pelicans dive for food. If you’re there during the summer months, there is live music and the outside bar is a personal fave.

3. Day time / night time drinking

The Tiki Hut is a fun little spot on the beach.  There are beach volleyball nets set up, live music, and delicious frozen drinks! Head to the Tiki Hut Barefoot Beach Bar for beach volleyball and mudslides on the ocean. For night life I’d go to the Frosty Frog for a few frozen drinks. They sneak up on you!

4. Fly HHI or explore by boat

Nothing beats helicopter views or the experience in general. From the sky you get breathtaking views of  the island waves crashing on the shore as well as gorgeous greenway views from over 40 golf course that are located on the island.

Head to the Marina to rent a boat for a few hours or the day.  You can even rent a captain!

5. Relax

Hang out by the beach or by the pool, read a good book, listen to music. Just enjoy vacation. All of the resorts that I have stayed at have great pools with game options like shuffle board and bocce ball.

HHI is pretty low key in my opinion.  It’s perfect for the family.  Hilton Head Island is over 42 square miles of semi-tropical landscape that you are bound to enjoy. The Gulf Stream keeps the temperature at an average of 70 degrees and with over 12 miles of white sandy beaches, it is the perfect place to relax. Grab the family and make your next vacation Hilton Head, SC.
