Rhode Island Luxury Travel Guide: Where to Stay, Eat & Explore

I just checked off a new state on our family travel list—Rhode Island—and honestly? I’m still thinking about it. If you think Rhode Island is all lighthouses and clam chowder (okay, it is that… but also so much more), let me introduce you to the ultimate luxury travel guide to Rhode Island—from where to stay and spa to the most charming towns you’ve never heard of. If you’re searching for a Rhode Island Luxury Travel guide, you’ve come to the right place!

Here’s the full rundown on where to stay, what to do, and the can’t-miss spots if you’re headed to Rhode Island:

Where to Stay

The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort

Imagine 3,500 acres of private luxury tucked away in the woods of Rhode Island. The Preserve is like if Yellowstone, a luxury lodge, and an adventure club had a baby—and then added spa robes, bourbon pairings, and over 60+ curated experiences.

This wasn’t your average weekend getaway. It was horseback rides on private trails, in-room dining that felt Michelin-level, archery lessons, spa time, and a literal Hobbit House dinner. Oh, and did I mention being chauffeured around in a $400K Bentley all weekend? Goals.

We stayed in one of their 2-bedroom, 3-bathroom townhomes, which felt like our own private mountain house—spacious, cozy, and fully loaded with resort access. Bonus? Our townhome had direct access to the “front yard” area, just a short walk to the basketball courts, tennis + pickleball courts, and the outdoor pool. It was perfect for exploring, relaxing, and letting my 5 year old burn off energy without even leaving “the neighborhood”.

And the accommodations here? Total range:
Glamping tents, treehouses, and tiny homes (often rented out by wedding parties + corporate retreats)
3-bedroom luxury lodges with basements—ideal for entertaining
• An adults-only Hilltop Lodge regularly booked by celebs and Real Housewives of NJ types 👀

Whether you’re looking for family-friendly comfort, group getaways, or grown-up glam—The Preserve has a vibe for it.

There’s an equestrian center, an indoor riding arena, archery range, clay shooting, fishing, a spa, golf, and so much more! 3 days were just not enough. Plus, it’s super family-friendly, but also romantic enough for a couple’s trip.

What to Do

This resort is packed with activities—and not in a forced-fun way. Everything feels curated, intentional, and luxurious.

Horseback Riding
We rode through the private trails and met the most iconic horse I’ve ever seen. One of their horses actually comes from the Yellowstone family bloodline and won $50M before retiring to The Preserve. Casual flex.

They’re also home to the second largest horse on the East Coast—his name is Beaer and he’s 19 hands. Casually weighing in at 2,300 pounds! (He’s actually lost 500 lbs, which is crazy because he’s huge!)

Spa Day at OH! Spa
The @ohspaatthepreserve is next-level luxury—easily one of the best spa experiences I’ve ever had. Think: cold plunge, multiple hot tubs, an outdoor infinity pool, sauna, and steam room… but it was the massage table that really blew me away.

No pillows needed—this table was fully automated, with a built-in bolster that adjusted to your body. The sheets were buttery soft, and the weighted top sheet? Heaven. They added a warm heat pack to my back, and the face cradle was the most comfortable I’ve ever felt (and I get massages twice a month).

This wasn’t just a massage—it was a full-body reset. The level of comfort and detail was unmatched, and the service? Five stars. It’s no surprise they have a spa membership program and host bachelorette parties here—the spa alone is a destination.

Archery
Because why not channel your inner Katniss? Archery at The Preserve was easily one of the highlights of our trip. Colton had a private lesson with Jake, who oversees the activities program. He started with a foam-tipped Nerf-style bow to get the hang of it, then graduated to real arrows like a total pro.

Meanwhile, Mike and I had our own lesson with Will, who walked us through the basics and helped us feel totally comfortable, even though we were total beginners. We started by aiming at standard targets, then leveled up to 3D targets like fake deer and turkeys. It was so fun to learn a new skill together as a family, and honestly? Kinda therapeutic if you’re even slightly competitive like me.

Hobbit House Dinner
This was next level. Picture a private, candlelit dinner inside a stone Hobbit House with a bourbon tasting and upscale grilled menu.

Dining at The Preserve’s Maker’s Mark HOBBIT HOUSES™ is like stepping into a storybook fairytail but make it luxe. These charming, subterranean dining spaces are inspired by Tolkien’s Middle-earth and seamlessly blend into the natural landscape, nestled into hillside boulders and surrounded by lush greenery. The architecture incorporates natural wood and stone, with tree trunks as integral design elements. A well-worn path leads to an intricately carved round wooden door that swings open to reveal an intimate interior with stone floors and artfully stacked stone walls. The flicker of candlelight and a wood-burning fireplace create a cozy, enchanting ambiance.

The dining experience features an upscale grilled menu thoughtfully prepared using Le Creuset cookware, paired with fine Maker’s Mark selections. Guests gather around a custom-designed Maker’s Mark wood table—repurposed from former whisky barrels—to enjoy a four-course meal inspired by regional and seasonal ingredients. After dinner, unwind around the fire pit under the stars, making this a truly unforgettable culinary adventure.

Where to Eat

In-Room Dining (or dine at Double Barrel Steak at the Preserve)
Chef-prepared meals brought right to your lodge. Cozy, intimate, and surprisingly impressive.

Hobbit House
Obviously. If you do one thing at The Preserve—make it this.

wickford on the water lobster roll rhode island

Wickford on the Water
A waterfront restaurant in the cutest historic town. We had seafood (lobster rolls of course), the most delectable goat cheese dip, and the vibe was so New England-chic.

nanas westerly rhode island

Nana’s Westerly
Farm-to-table style restaurant with a cool, cozy interior. Everything we ordered was amazing. Worth the drive over to Westerly. Save room for dessert, trust me.

lake taco rhode island

Lake Taco
Fresh, flavorful, and a total surprise hit. We had wings, tacos, and the cheese dip with their signature chip seasoning—and honestly, we’re still dreaming about it. Casual vibe, big flavor. Oh and great views!

Lickety Splits
Right next door to The Preserve, this little ice cream shop is the cherry on top of your stay. It’s the perfect stop after a day of riding, archery, or pool time. Super kid-friendly and packed with classic flavors. Colton-approved!

What to Explore Nearby

Wickford Village
A storybook town with boutique shops, chocolate stores, and super charming streets. Great for a casual stroll or a little shopping spree.

Martin House Books & Café
If you love bookstores or just want a cozy moment, this is the spot. I picked up a book, grabbed a latte, and soaked in the small-town vibes. Make sure to look for my children’s book, Her Body Can!

Watch Hill Lighthouse
The views here are stunning—and yes, you can see Taylor Swift’s Holiday House from the area. Just sayin’. (Alexa, play the last great American dynasty)

Final Thoughts

Rhode Island was unexpected—in the best way. It had the charm, the history, the views… but The Preserve brought that laid-back luxury that I LIVE for. If you’re planning a trip to the East Coast and want something that feels exclusive, peaceful, and unique, this is it. I don’t say this often, but… we’ll be back!
