Planning your Germany itinerary but not sure where to go? Here's a list of the most beautiful cities in Germany that you definitely need to visit! From fairy tale wonderlands to cities filled with art, these are our favorite destinations in Germany. #Germany

For a country that’s relatively small, Germany is home to a hell of a lot of the most beautiful destinations in Europe.

While the Alps and castles are undoubtedly the stars of the show, Germany also boasts some seriously stunning towns and cities. We’ve rounded up our favorites to either help you plan your Germany itinerary or if you don’t really have plans yet, to inspire you to book the next flight out to Europe to check these places out!

Here are some of the most beautiful towns and cities in Germany:

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Think cobblestone streets, half-timbered houses, and colorful outdoor cafés and you’ll get a pretty good picture of what Rothenburg looks like.

A walk through this untouched medieval town feels like stepping into a storybook. Although a day trip is enough to fully soak up the beauty of Rothenburg, we recommend staying at least one night here as the town is home to some of Germany’s quirkiest museums like the Doll Museum, the Christmas Museum, and the Craft House!

Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber is definitely one of our favorite destinations in Germany! If you love fairy tale settings and medieval houses, Rothenburg needs to be in your Germany itinerary!

Nuremberg

In the mood for a trip back in time to the 15th century? Then a visit to Nuremberg is a must on your Germany itinerary. Picture a kickass old town lined by gothic churches, medieval houses, historic structures, and cobblestone alleys.

And then there’s Nuremberg Castle. Perched on a sandstone cliff overlooking the city, the castle dates back to the Holy Roman Empire and visitors can explore its underground tunnels or climb up to get the best panoramic views the city has to offer.

Nuremberg is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Germany

Heidelberg

Winding alleys, an impressive castle, local breweries, and centuries-old bridges are the staples of Germany’s most stunning city. If fairytale-like places are your jam, you’re bound to fall hard for Heidelberg.

Our favorite aspect of Heidelberg is that it’s also the gateway to Germany’s famous Black Forest, where you can head over to after exploring the city. If you love history but are also a nature buff, this region of Germany is definitely the place for you!

No Germany itinerary is complete without visiting Heidelberg, one of the most stunning cities in Europe

Dresden

Dresden’s magic is that is has something to offer to every type of traveler.

If you love history, check out the many amazing historical buildings in the city’s old town. Into nature? A short drive away will take you to Saxon Switzerland National Park, where you can spend the day hiking in the forest. Are you more of the artsy type? Dresden’s Opera House has you covered!

Dresden is the perfect destination in Germany for any type of traveler!

Munich

Would a list about the most beautiful cities in Germany be legit if it didn’t include Munich? I mean, sure, it’s a cliché, but there are just too many reasons why every single visitor falls hard for the Bavarian capital.

Nestled amid the Alps, Munich is home to picture-perfect palaces, unique Bavarian culture, and some pretty kickass museums that you’ll definitely want to check out (even if you’re not a museum person). Given that the state of Bavaria has its own culture, Munich and its surrounding villages are often hosts to unique events and festivities, like the ever-famous Oktoberfest!

Munich is a gem in Bavaria that you definitely need to visit while in Germany! This is one of our favorite cities in Germany and Oktoberfest isn't the only reason why!

Hamburg

German musician Lotto King Karl once wrote a famous hymn in dedication to the city, which went sort of like this “Hamburg, my pearl you wonderful city” and that pretty much describes Hamburg perfectly.

Set along the Elbe River, Hamburg might look like a regular port town, but it’s really so much more than that! The city is a hub for science, culture, and arts. If you love all things quirky, you’ll definitely want to check out Miniature Wonderland, which is basically a model railway that will take you on a trip around the world.

As far as German cities go, Hamburg is definitely one that should be one everyone’s Europe itinerary.

And that’s our list! Of course, there are many more amazing towns and cities in Germany that we might not even be aware of, but these are for sure our favorites! What are some other amazing towns and cities in Germany that you love?
