Some hotels you want to stay in and some you never want to leave. This was definitely one of those hotels. PRINCIPAL is a collection of city-centre hotels based in landmark buildings in exceptional locations across Great Britain. The distinctive heritage and resulting relationship between the properties and their surroundings are the cornerstones of the PRINCIPAL brand.

Each of the hotels has a story to tell—of its history, its design and architecture, its quirks and characters, and its role in shaping the city. Winner of Scottish Hotel of the Year at the 2017 Scottish Hotel Awards, The Principal Edinburgh on George Street is an ideal base from which to explore the city or conduct business.

Hotel + Rooms

Our stay at The Principal on George Street in Edinburgh Scotland was incredible. Think chic Scotland spirit interior and design in a renovated historic building that is dripping with character and charm. This stay was one of my favorites on our trip through the UK. One stand out feature was the cutest little red mailbox downstairs that you could drop any post card or letter into and the hotel would stamp and mail it for you!

Other favorites included breakfast in bed, the claw foot bath tub, nightly turn down service with water and weather card drop off. The extra living room with a TV, mini fridge, and tea tray in the signature suite was ideal. We loved the make up table that included a stand up mirror and also could be used as a desk in the room, and of course the heated towels, plush comfy robes and slippers! Basically I loved everything and if you like staying in luxury and being pampered, you will too!

For such a stunning hotel, it is extremely affordable.  Plus, it’s only a 10-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley train station. Can you believe I actually walked there with my luggage?! It was only a few blocks and Edinburgh at sunset is beautiful so it was quite nice.

As you can see we destroyed our room made ourselves at home in our signature suite. The five star hotel was so charming and right outside of our window we had the most amazing views! There was plenty of storage for our clothes and jackets. Ample sitting areas and a separate tv lounge area which I used as my dressing room and luggage storage.

The Principal is stacked with amenities. There is a 24hour front desk reception, wifi, fitness center, spa, meeting facilities, room service, bar and a restaurant on site. Not to mention, they are pet friendly so all of your furbabies are allowed! Those are just a few of the numerous amenities they have on site.

Food + Drinks

We got the warmest welcome on our arrival. There was the sweetest little wicker basket full of snacks and drinks along with a few bottles of water. I don’t know about you but when you’re traveling, hydration is key.

If you’re looking for modern Scottish cooking, you’ve come to the right place. At the heart of The Principal Edinburgh George Street are five listed Georgian townhouses, built in 1775 as homes for the city’s most prosperous citizens—among  them James Ferrier, a lawyer, who bought No. 25 and whose daughter, Susan, was considered by Sir Walter Scott to be the equal of Jane Austen.  Their former home is now The Printing Press Bar & Kitchen, where local Executive Chef Colin Fleming champions modern Scottish cooking.

From a flat white to a long black, Burr & Co. has become part and parcel of Edinburgh’s coffee culture. The perfect place to enjoy homemade cakes, pastries and sandwiches.

Everything we ate was so delicious. Especially the croissants and poppy seed muffins we had every morning! The perfect way to start your day.
