Our Stay at El Dorado Maroma, Playa del Carmen, Mexico!

When I think of a honeymoon, I think tropical paradise – like El Dorado Maroma Beach. Instead of opting for a big wedding, I knew I wanted an awesome trip where we could just relax and enjoy each other. I decided I didn’t want to do the research on my own so I started working with a travel agent who had tons of questions on what we wanted out of our honeymoon. And we finally decided on El Dorado Maroma.

Check out our experience at El Dorado Maroma!

Hotel + Rooms

El Dorado Maroma is a quaint, lush hotel on Maroma Beach. It’s about 30 minutes from Cancun and more laid back. But there’s plenty of tequila and drinks flowing at this all inclusive adult hotel.

I will say the lobby is less than impressive but the rooms and the rest of the hotel is where you will fall in love and appreciate the small details about the property. And the service and the staff are top notch. You won’t pass an employee without getting a “Hola!”. By the end of the week, you’ll feel like you’re leaving friends.

There are different types of rooms but they are all very spacious and nice. We stayed in the Infinity Pool Jacuzzi Suite and had an amazing view of the beach and ocean. None of the hotels on Maroma Beach are sky rises so you aren’t going to be way up but if you can get the 4th floor at the hotel, it will be the best view. There’s a cozy king bed and even an extra sitting area. The bathroom was large and had Jack and Jill sinks (score!). We had an outdoor shower, which we used the whole time and didn’t step foot in the indoor shower. There was a big jacuzzi which I was set on using but after being in the sun all day, it was hard to think about a hot bath.

The best part of our room was the patio with our own infinity pool,  which they came every day and cleaned out. There was a lounge bed outside on the porch along with two chairs. We spent a lot of time outside just staring at our view.

They do have bungalows on the water called the “Palafitos”. These are pretty sweet, but I do wish they were further off the beach. Check out some of the pictures below:

Food + Drink

This is an all inclusive hotel so all drinks and food are included. There are some up charges like the lobster dinner or if you order a bottle of wine. There’s five restuarants onsite, several bars and even two swim up bars. Some are only open for lunch and dinner. Our favorite restuarants were MIO and Kiyoko. Papitos mixes up their lunch menu/buffet everyday so don’t be fooled (like we almost were). Since it’s all inclusive it’s more like small plates, so order a few. Oh and let’s not forget about the 24 hour room service!

We also planned a romantic dinner on the beach. You pick the 4 courses ahead of time from soup/salad, appetizer, entree and dessert. It was slightly breezy and the perfect night.

Plus each time you enter a restaurant, they offer you hand sanitizer, which catches you off guard at first but it’s a nice touch.

Spa

This was a must on our list! We actually had three massages while we were there (I know, I know). Our first massage was on the beach. I would recommend doing this earlier in the morning. We did it around lunch time and it was a little toasty under the sheet and the beach is right there, so it’s not as quiet. The others we opted to be inside. I’d recommend not booking spa appointments ahead of time. Once you’re there, you can work with your personal concierge on rates as they are not as firm as you may think.

Activities

The hotel plans activities each day like cooking classes, beach volleyball, yoga, kayaking so if it’s hard to lay by the pool everyday, there’s other events on site.

Right next door to the hotel is a marina which offers jet skiing, ATVs, speed boats, horseback riding, swimming with dolphins and some other activities. Many other resorts are shuttled to this marina so it’s nice that you can just walk over.

At the hotel, you’re able to book MANY other excursions from cave diving, zip lines, trips to the ruins, etc. We had intentions to do some activities but ended up staying around the hotel except our one day trip into Playa del Carmen, which I definitely recommend. We were able to call a cab and do things at our pace.

And if you’re looking to party, you could easily go back into Cancun for the night. Or if you prefer hammock life, they are placed throughout the property.

It was a great trip! 5 days and 6 nights just wasn’t enough. Wishing everyday I could live that beach life – no shoes, no hair dryer, no alarm clock. But it was back to reality.

Adios Mexico, you were fun!
